This torii gate is the entrance to a shrine. The center section swings open to accommodate more people or parades during celebrations.
The shape, angles and curves are all carefully planned out and each part has its own name and historical significance.
We saw lots of them when we lived in Japan, and if I ever build a Japanese garden, it will have at least one torii gate in it.
