The rocks in today’s jigsaw puzzles are often called “river rocks,” but in reality, they are tumbled stones and crystals, which are rough minerals that have been smoothed and highly polished using a specialized machine called a rock tumbler.
My mother used to polish stones like that, and she visited a place called Hiddenite in North Carolina where you can visit the Emerald Hollow Mine to try to find your own precious gems.
It’s the only emerald mine in the world open to the public for prospecting, digging, and sluicing.
