Jigsaw Puzzle History Lesson – Nestled directly in the center of the coastal town of Agios Nikolaos in eastern Crete, Lake Voulismeni is a stunning geological marvel that bridges the gap between ancient mythology and modern history.
This circular, mirror-like body of water, ringed by red rock cliffs, traditional fishing boats, and vibrant waterfront cafes, serves as the undeniable focal point of the city.
For centuries, Lake Voulismeni was a freshwater landlocked sinkhole. However, its modern history took a dramatic turn in 1856 when a powerful earthquake hit Crete, collapsing its underground fresh springs.
With the water supply cut off, the lake quickly became stagnant, earning the local nickname Vromolimni (“the stinky lake”).
To resolve the issue, a channel was excavated between 1867 and 1907 to connect the lake directly to the Aegean Sea.
This brilliant piece of engineering transformed the stagnant pool into a picturesque, saltwater inner harbor where fishermen still moor their colorful wooden vessels today.
Beyond its scenic beauty, the lake is steeped in captivating lore. According to ancient Greek mythology, the goddesses Athena and Artemis would bathe in its secluded waters.
For generations, locals also believed the lake was completely bottomless due to its unusually steep, funnel-like depth.
While modern soundings have disproven the myth, it remains remarkably deep, plunging nearly 49 meters (160 feet) despite being only 137 meters wide.
During World War II, the lake served a more utilitarian purpose. When German forces retreated from Crete in 1944, locals cleared the town by dumping abandoned military hardware, armored vehicles, and weaponry straight into the deep waters.
Today, the lake is peaceful, offering visitors a perfect blend of natural beauty, deep mysteries, and Cretan charm.
