This jigsaw puzzle is of the “Quartier Schützenstraße,” one of the most distinctive post-reunification architectural masterpieces in Berlin.
Before the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, this very ground was a somber, empty strip of land sitting right in the shadow of the death strip near Checkpoint Charlie.
Following reunification, Berlin was eager to stitch itself back together. Enter the legendary Italian architect Aldo Rossi.
Completed in 1997, just days before his tragic passing, Rossi designed this block not as one massive corporate complex, but as a playful collage of twelve distinct building facades.
It tricks your eyes into thinking this neighborhood naturally evolved over centuries!
Notice the dramatic contrast in textures and tones, from the blaring aluminum green to the muted, warm pinks and cornflower blues inspired by ancient Roman architecture.
Rossi even hid a brilliant architectural easter egg inside: one of the internal courtyards features a precise replica of the Renaissance-era Palazzo Farnese courtyard in Rome.
While it doesn’t house celebrity A-listers, its fame comes from the vibrant international community of artists, diplomats, and creative professionals who live and work behind these colorful walls.
It stands today as a brilliant symbol of Berlin’s rebirth—turning a once-divided, desolate border zone into a celebration of color, history, and architectural whimsy.
