Today’s jigsaw puzzle is of a bedroom that sits inside Westbury House, a magnificent Charles II-style mansion completed in 1906.
Designed by English architect George A. Crawley, the 23-room English Revival manor was built for John Shaffer Phipps—heir to the U.S. Steel fortune—and his English wife, Margarita Grace.
Crawley modeled the estate after historic English manor homes to ease Margarita’s transition to America, creating a lasting symbol of America’s Gilded Age wealth. The bedroom reflects this transatlantic elegance, anchored by a grand, elaborately carved four-poster canopy bed draped in opulent red damask silk.
Richly detailed floral wallpaper in deep blue and crimson hues covers the walls, accented by classical white plaster crown moldings along the ceiling. Natural light from the multi-paned windows highlights a vibrant Persian area rug, a floral upholstered armchair, and finely crafted mahogany furniture. Restored exactly to its early 20th-century appearance, the room retains the original antiques and decorative arts accumulated over fifty years of family life. Westbury House stands on the National Register of Historic Places, serving as a beautifully preserved public museum that offers an intimate look at twentieth-century high society.
It is located in the Old Westbury Gardens in Old Westbury, Long Island, New York.
