Today’s jigsaw puzzle is of the breathtaking islet of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, located along the rugged Bay of Biscay coast in Spain’s Basque Country.
I’m not 100% sure, but I believe we sailed past this back when I was in the Navy. It looks really familiar. I know we didn’t stop there, though. We were lucky enough to stop at about a half-dozen other places, including stops in France, Italy, Greece, Spain, and a couple of others I can’t remember off the top of my head.
Here’s a quick write-up about San Juan de Gaztelugatxe:
“Welcome to a world where ancient legends meet the untamed beauty of the Atlantic. Perched dramatically on a rocky islet along Spain’s striking northern coastline, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is an unforgettable sanctuary carved by time, sea, and history.
Your journey begins at the edge of the mainland, where a narrow, medieval-style stone footbridge arches gracefully over crashing waves and jagged rock formations. From there, the real adventure takes flight. Challenge your senses and ignite your spirit as you ascend the legendary pathway of 241 hand-carved stone steps. This winding, serpentine staircase hugs the steep contours of the emerald-colored island, offering sweeping, panoramic views of deep blue waters and dramatic sea arches at every turn.
At the very pinnacle of this craggy peak sits a charming, solitary hermitage dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, dating back to the 10th century. According to local lore, reaching the summit unlocks a timeless tradition. Ring the chapel’s bell three times and make a wish—the sound echoing out across the open sea is said to bring good fortune and drive away evil spirits.”
If I ever get back to Europe, this is on my bucket list.
