Today’s daily jigsaw puzzle is a nice view of the old Mabry Mill, located on the Blue Ridge Parkway in a place called the “Meadows of Dan” in Virginia. Specifically, you can find it at Milepost 176.
Yes, I saw it many, many years ago.
In brief, Ed Mabry and his wife, Lizzy, built it starting in 1905, and it was fully operational by 1908. He later constructed a sawmill and woodworking shop, also powered by the water wheel. He also built a blacksmith shop.
It was known as a “slow mill” because it didn’t have much water power, but this had the advantage of grinding corn slowly and avoiding scorching it. That was a common problem for faster mills, but the slower grind produced better-tasting cornmeal.
The mill offers fantastic views, especially in spring when the flowers bloom.
