Today’s jigsaw puzzle has a bit of a quiz for you. Do you know where the name “Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.” came from?
If so, you either have parents with excellent taste, or you are a senior citizen.
I say great parents if they let you watch the movie “Forrest Gump.” I say senior citizen if you went to the movies to see it way, way back in 1994.
I first saw it in Bahrain when it was shown there in the base theater at the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain.
We had just pulled into port that morning, and we were only allowed to go from the ship to the base via a bus that was provided to us.
Most of my fellow sailors were in the base bar/recreation area shooting pool, or other activities. As a result, only about twenty people from my ship went to see it.
I understood that word got around and the crowd size increased a lot. During our next port visit, it was still playing so I went and saw it again.
Since then, we bought it on VHS tape, then later on DVD.
I’ve never been to a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurant, but it’s on my list. Unfortunately, there aren’t any in North Carolina, and the nearest is in Gatlinburg, TN.
That’s about a four- to five-hour drive each way.
