Thursday’s jigsaw puzzle is on my list of places to visit if I ever get to go to France again.
It is now known as the National Museum of the Middle Ages, and it is located in Paris, France. Specifically, it is in the 5th arrondissement (Latin Quarter.)
It has an amazingly rich history going back over 2,000 years.
Back when it was the Roman city of Lutetia, it was a massive public bath complex. Part of it eventually collapsed, but a cold room – called the frigidarium – survived intact, including it’s 45-ft tall vaulted stone ceilings.
Centuries later, the land was bought by the Benedictine Abbots of Cluny, and they turned it into a type of hotel to be used when they visited Paris.
It was rebuilt several times, and had lots of high-profile visitors, including Mary Tudor.
After the French Revolution, it was nationalized and broken up into rental units.
It was eventually turned into a museum which opened in 1844.
I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to visit it when I was in France back in the 1990’s.
