In times past, particularly the 1800’s, some of the better to-do families would have a room exclusively for music.
Pianos, cellos, violins, etc. It was a place for people to gather to listen to music because Spotify had lousy coverage back then.
Since Netflix hadn’t been invented yet nor even the TV, people would spend their spare time devoted to a hobby or two, and music was often one of them.
I’m sure you’ve seen some period movies or TV’s where there would be the one daughter who played for company. Sometimes there would be more than one and they would take turns playing.
We have to see this in movies because the iPhone only had enough memory for one tiny photograph and then you had to buy another one.
Things have gotten better these days.
The guy in today’s jigsaw puzzle is waiting for his audience to arrive but they are late because they stopped to watch a flash mob of about fifty people play Ravel’s Bolero on the kazoo.
Enjoy and pardon my rambling!
