According to Wikipedia, “Stepwells are wells or ponds in which the water is reached by descending a set of steps to the water level.”
Makes sense to me.
Stepwells were built in a variety of shapes and sizes. While mostly depicted as square or rectangular, they were even built in round shapes.
Interestingly, they weren’t just to store and provide water. They were used for recreation as well as religious purposes. Many had temples built inside, and the lower the level of the water, the more rooms and spaces became available to be used.
If I ever go back to India, I hope to visit one.
Here’s today’s jigsaw puzzle featuring a Stepwell.
Enjoy!
