My grandmother had one of these tables. I’m sure there are a lot of folks that remember them.
Way, way back then, if your house had a phone, it had only one, and your choice of where it was installed was limited.
As it was considered a luxury item, you had to get it’s own unique furniture to hold it. The solution (or plot by the phone company to get you to talk on it longer so they could make more money) was to create a table with a padded bench.
These were usually near the front door, and had a place to hold a phone book, and maybe a writing tablet (over sized notepad) for you to scribble on while you talked.
Oh, the phones back then were rotary phones, which means the dial went in a circle when you dialed a number.
Of course, that means the pieces in Thursday’s jigsaw puzzle rotate as well.
